Petra

I don’t think Petra needs much of an introduction; Wonder of the World seems about right to me. The Treasury is the most iconic building at the site in Jordan but what truly surprised me was the scale of the site. It is huge and there are so many remarkable buildings you cannot help but doff your cap to the Nabateans for carving this city out of sandstone, particularly in such a unforgiving environment.

Some extra reading from the experts includes “Lost City” of Petra Still Has Secrets to Reveal [National Geographic].

What is less known is that there is another such remarkable Nabatean city, Mada’in Saleh, in Saudi Arabia, which largely for that reason is off most tourists’ radar.
